About
the National Music Festival The purpose
of the National Music Festival is to bring together
world-class music teachers (mentors) from major
orchestras, chamber ensembles and conservatory faculties
and gifted apprentice musicians on the cusp of their
professional careers. All apprentices receive full
tuition scholarships and housing. The two groups
rehearse and perform together at Washington
College and throughout the Eastern Shore in
orchestral, chamber, solo recital, vocal, choral
and chamber opera repertoire. For two weeks, these
musicians live and work together, presenting 33
concerts, 38 events and over 200 free open rehearsals
for music lovers from all over the world.
The
National Music Festival is a division of OuterArts,
Inc. OuterArts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
The National Music Festival is debt-free.
In
the second year, the Festival served over 100 apprentices
and employed 28 mentors (including the Artistic
and Executive Directors, who also taught). In addition
to its performances, open rehearsals and broadcasts
on National Public Radio, the National Music Festival
will record compact discs to be distributed globally
on the Naxos/Marco Polo label.
The
musicians who came to the 2012 National Music Festival
came from 16 countries and 28 U.S. states. The average
age of apprentices is 23, although some are older
and have already completed their advanced degrees
and have begun their careers.
The
Festival’s performances and pre-concert talks
provide affordably priced entertainment and education
to its patrons, including children. All rehearsals
are free and open to the public. Attending rehearsals
is a particularly good way to introduce young children
to classical music since they do not have to stay
for the entire time and may attend only as much
as they wish.
The
Festival is environmentally conscious and collaborates
to the fullest extent possible with local organizations
in and out of the arts.
